"shop-teacher" (shop-teacher)

When I picked up the girls tonight, the 4-year old enthusiastically, repeatedly, and very sweetly asked ... to go to Home Depot. How could I say no to that? Answer: can’t.

It’s never too early to teach them about the virtues of duct tape.

Indeed! The big one was asking questions about the tools. She picked out a utility knife :)

I think my girls were 2 when one looks out of the car window and goes are we going to home depot? I couldn’t believe she could recognize the sign that young

Not this time. We’re also trying to teach her that she doesn’t get to have everything she wants, even if she asks nicely.
Should have bought her a screwdriver or something though.

That’s about when it started actually. Summers when I’m home with them, we probably go there about once a week, whether we need anything or not. It’s a good way to get out of the house.

I’ve had the opposite experience. Last week i was in HD and a guy was going through the wood looking for ones not warped. He was neatly stacking them, when one of the employees came over and started flipping out “whats wrong with the wood, just grab one and move on!”

Good work. I have a friend who was long-time middle school teacher (now principal) who said - they have so much else going on socially and physically, it’s a surprise they can learn anything - they should just be out digging ditches...
That said - the demise of music, art and shop programs in middle and high schools is a detriment to education - the mind-body problem solving, the creative outlet, and the flexibility of learning for those kids that don’t learn from books, or for whom the college-career track isn’t the best fit.

Agreed on all fronts. Fortunately I work for a district in a community that values these programs very much, and is willing to fight for them. Before I worked there, the district decided to shut down the middle school shop program. Hundreds of people turned up to the board meetings, their tool boxes in hand, to demand they keep the program. The mayor of the town made an impassioned speech about how he was completely lost an aimless as a youth, until the program taught him something he was interested in and gave him a direction. It worked.

Haha! She didn’t get to take them home. She did get her first screw driver a couple weeks ago though. She managed to change the batteries in her little sister’s toy almost entirely by herself a few days ago. I was so proud!
